The Uptown stack is the thing that makes Butte relining different from relining anywhere else we work. A tall brick chimney on a 1900s house here was not built to serve one appliance. It was built to serve the whole house - a coal range in the kitchen, a heater or two on the floors above, sometimes a water heater - each with its own flue inside the same brickwork.

Over a century those connections were abandoned one at a time as the appliances changed. The holes were capped, or plastered over, or covered by a later wall, and the knowledge of what was where went with the owners. What we now find, routinely, is a stack with two live connections, two dead ones nobody can account for, and no certainty about which flue actually goes with which.

That is a camera job before it is a lining job, and the survey is the cheap part.

Why the shared flue matters more than the cracked one

The finding people expect us to care about is cracked brickwork. The one that actually gets our attention in these houses is two appliances discharging into the same flue.

It happens because a flue that once took a coal stove was later given a gas water heater, and then someone put a wood stove on what they believed was a separate flue in the same stack. If those two connections meet, the appliances compete. The wood stove wins once it is hot, and the gas appliance spills its exhaust into the basement instead of up the chimney. There is no smell worth noticing and the product is carbon monoxide.

The fix is either separate liners where the stack has the cross section for it, or one liner and a direct-vent arrangement for the gas appliance - which in an old Butte house is frequently cheaper than fighting for room inside brickwork that does not have it.
